The Cross-Cut Adhesion Tester is designed and manufactured according to ISO 2409-1992. It is also applicable to GB/T 9286-98, BS 3900 E6, and ASTM D3359 standards.
This instrument is primarily used to evaluate the adhesion of organic coatings using the cross-cut method. It is suitable for both laboratory testing and on-site evaluation under various conditions.
The instrument uses a multi-blade cutting tool to create a grid pattern on the coating. The cuts penetrate the coating, and the resulting pattern is classified into six levels to evaluate the coating’s resistance to separation from the substrate.
Parameter | Specification |
---|---|
Blade Spacing | 1 ± 0.01 mm, 2 ± 0.01 mm, 3 ± 0.01 mm |
Blade Straightness | ≤ 0.003 mm – 0.006 mm |
Blade Tip Width | ≤ 0.05 mm |
Coating Thickness | 60 µm / 120 µm / 120 µm |
Applicable Standards | ISO 2409, GB/T 9286, ASTM D3359 |
Sample Preparation | According to ISO R1514 and ISO 2808 |
Test Panel Size | Standard rigid panels (e.g., 75×150 mm) |
Prepare test specimens according to ISO R1514 and ISO 2808.
Place the specimen on a sufficiently hard, flat surface.
Hold the cross-cut handle so the multi-blade cutter is perpendicular to the specimen surface.
Cut the coating with uniform pressure at a speed of 20–50 mm/s, avoiding vibrations.
Rotate the specimen 90° and repeat the cut to form a grid pattern.
Use a soft brush along both diagonals of the grid: brush backward 5 times and forward 5 times.
Perform the test at at least three different locations on each specimen. If results differ, test additional locations and record all results.
To replace the blade: loosen the two screws on the cutter body, insert the new blade (cutting edge facing the handle), and tighten the screws.
All cuts must penetrate the coating but not damage the substrate.
If the coating is too thick or hard to penetrate, the test is invalid, but this must be noted in the report.
In special cases, or if required, the tape method can be used: apply 25 mm wide semi-transparent tape with a polyester or cellulose acetate backing, press over the grid, then peel at a minimal angle. Evaluate adhesion by the percentage of coating removed.
Test conditions: 23 ± 2°C and 50 ± 5% RH.
ISO Rating | ASTM Rating | Description |
---|---|---|
0 | 5B | Edges smooth; no detachment |
1 | 4B | Small flakes at intersections; <5% coating removed |
2 | 3B | Edges/intersections flaked; 5–15% coating removed |
3 | 2B | Partial or full flakes along edges/intersections; 15–35% removed |
4 | 1B | Large flakes along edges or partial/complete grid removal; 35–65% removed |
5 | 0B | >65% coating removed |
