(1) Standard weather-resistant powder coating: This is the most economical option and can pass approximately 1–2 years of natural Florida exposure testing. It is suitable for indoor doors and windows, windows on shaded sides, or low-rise buildings with relatively low UV exposure. Under normal indoor conditions, it can generally be used for more than ten years without major problems, offering very good cost-effectiveness.
(2) Improved weather-resistant powder coating: It offers improved weather resistance and can pass approximately 2–3 years of Florida exposure testing. It is suitable for outdoor doors and windows in most ordinary residential buildings and is the mainstream choice in the home decoration market.
(3) Super-durable powder coating: It offers excellent weather resistance and can pass more than 5 years of Florida exposure testing, helping ensure that the coating does not chalk or crack over a long period. Some high-quality products can provide weather resistance warranties of 10 or even 20 years. It is suitable for high-rise buildings, environments with severe west-facing sunlight exposure, coastal environments with high humidity and heavy salt spray, and outdoor curtain walls or other projects with extremely high durability requirements.
(4) Fluorocarbon powder coating: This is currently the best choice in terms of weather resistance. Its performance can be comparable to that of solvent-based fluorocarbon coatings, with extremely strong resistance to UV radiation, acid rain, and corrosion. It is suitable for landmark buildings, harsh industrial environments, and other applications with extremely high durability requirements, but it also has the highest price.

National standard: Products sold domestically should meet the requirements of GB/T 5237.4-2017. Wrought Aluminium Alloy Extruded Profiles for Architecture Part 4: Powder Coating Profiles. Some key indicators can be used as references:
(1) Coating thickness: The total dry film thickness is generally required to be ≥40 μm.
(2) Adhesion: The cross-cut test should achieve Grade 0–1.
(3) Salt spray resistance: No substrate corrosion after 3.000 hours of neutral salt spray testing.
(4) Weather resistance: After 3.000 hours of QUV aging, the gloss retention should be ≥80%.
International certifications: If higher quality requirements apply, attention can be paid to products certified by QUALICOAT, GSB, or AAMA, such as AAMA 2603/2604/2605. These certifications have stricter classifications for coating weather resistance, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. For example, AAMA 2605 products are required to pass a 10-year Florida exposure test.

Common Problems and Solutions for Aluminum Door and Window Powder Coating

1. Coating Color Difference
Problem: The coating color differs from the standard sample. GB 5237.4 requires the color difference of powder-coated profiles to be no greater than 1.5.
Main causes: The heat resistance of pigments or curing agents in the powder coating is inadequate; the baking and curing conditions at the coating plant are inconsistent with the color-matching conditions at the powder coating manufacturer; the coating thickness is uneven, which is particularly noticeable with light-colored powders; or the temperature distribution in the curing oven is uneven or the curing time is inconsistent.
Solutions: Select pigments and curing agent systems with good heat resistance; ensure that the curing conditions at the coating plant are consistent with the color-matching conditions at the powder coating manufacturer; maintain uniform coating thickness; and set baking times according to the material, thickness, and shape of the workpieces to ensure uniform temperature distribution in the curing oven.
2. Poor Coating Adhesion
Problem: The coating does not bond firmly to the substrate and is prone to peeling and blistering. National standards require dry adhesion, wet adhesion, and boiling-water adhesion to achieve Grade 0.
Main causes: Oil and contaminants on the workpiece surface have not been thoroughly removed, or the quality of the chromate conversion coating is poor; surface contamination occurs due to residues from the pretreatment bath; or the baking temperature and time in the curing oven do not meet process requirements.
Solutions: Strengthen the workpiece surface treatment process to ensure thorough degreasing and good chromate conversion coating quality; reasonably set the curing temperature and time according to the profile size and powder type. The preferred process parameters are: chromate conversion treatment, chromate conversion coating thickness of 0.5–2 μm, crosslinking curing temperature of 200°C, and curing time of 20 minutes.
3. Surface Particles
Problem: Raised particles are present on the coating surface, affecting appearance quality.
Main causes: Burrs, aluminum chips, graphite marks, and other contaminants are present on the substrate surface due to poor pretreatment; residues from the pretreatment bath adhere to the profile surface and are not thoroughly removed during rinsing; chromated materials have been stored for an extended period before coating and have accumulated dust on the surface; impurities are present in virgin or recovered powder; or suspended particles are present due to an unclean spraying area or curing oven.
Solutions: Grind the surface of blanks before hanging them on the line or perform sandblasting; regularly drain and clean the pretreatment bath to remove residues and extend the pure-water rinsing time; thoroughly blow off dust after chromated materials are placed on the line; spray a thin coating onto new hooks before use; sieve recovered powder before use; implement 6S management in the workshop, keep the spraying area clean, and regularly clean the curing oven.
4. Cratering
Problem: Circular depressions similar to volcanic craters appear on the coating surface, seriously affecting appearance and potentially resulting in rework or even scrapping.
Main causes: Oil and gas in compressed air reduce the local surface tension through oil droplets, causing cratering; moisture-affected powder forms agglomerates in the fluidized powder container; damaged screens during powder production allow large particles to enter the powder; powder formulations from different batches or manufacturers are incompatible; or accumulated powder in the powder pump of the powder supply system falls off.
Solutions: Regularly inspect and replace oil filters to prevent oil and gas in compressed air from causing cratering; moisture-affected powder can be mixed with new powder of the same color or used with increased atomizing air volume, while severely affected powder should be discarded; when using powders with different formulations, thoroughly clean the spray booth, spray guns, and recovery system; regularly clean accumulated powder around the powder pump nozzle.
5. Uneven Coating
Problem: The coating thickness is inconsistent, resulting in differences in surface gloss or color.
Main causes: Improper hanging and arrangement of chromated materials; poor grounding of aluminum materials or poor electrical conductivity of individual hooks; uneven conveyor chain speed, or poor coordination between chain speed and spray gun reciprocating speed; improper powder output or powder atomization from the spray gun; or unstable compressed air pressure.
Solutions: Select suitable hooks for the corresponding profiles and check the electrical conductivity of the hooks; properly coordinate the hanging density, chain speed, and reciprocating speed during spraying; control the ratio of suction air to powder delivery air; and strengthen equipment maintenance to keep the equipment operating stably.
