I. Client Background
The client is a US-based manufacturer of food equipment, primarily producing and supplying machinery for food processing, food handling, and related commercial applications. Certain metal components require surface powder coating to enhance corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and aesthetic appeal, while also meeting stringent requirements for coating safety, stability, and ease of cleaning in food-related applications. As production scales up, the client sought a powder coating manufacturer capable of providing reliable production and technical support—specifically for food-grade equipment—and helping to optimize their existing coating processes.
II. Client Requirements
Based on the product structure and operational environment, the client outlined several requirements for the food-grade powder coating:Suitability for food-related equipment
The coating must withstand the operating environments of food processing and handling equipment and comply with relevant regulations for food-contact materials based on specific end-use applications.
1. Good corrosion resistance
Food equipment is frequently exposed to moisture, humidity, and various cleaning agents; therefore, the coating requires robust anti-corrosion properties.
2. Excellent wear resistance
To withstand the friction, impacts, and cleaning routines associated with long-term equipment use, the coating requires superior wear resistance and strong adhesion.
3. Smooth surface and ease of cleaning
The client requires a coating with excellent flow and a dense finish to minimize stain adhesion and facilitate daily cleaning and maintenance.
4. Consistent application performance
The powder must exhibit excellent electrostatic sprayability and stable curing characteristics to ensure uniform, consistent coating coverage on complex metal components.
5. Consistent batch quality
Given the need for continuous mass production, the client requires high consistency across batches regarding color, gloss, particle size, and curing performance.
III. Our Solution
To meet the client's specific needs, our technical team developed a tailored food-grade powder coating solution, taking into account the substrate materials, product design, operating environment, and application processes. We began by selecting the appropriate powder coating system based on the client's actual application scenarios, followed by optimizing the formulation and performance characteristics to align with food-safety requirements, coating performance standards, and processing conditions. During the product development process, we focused on controlling the following performance characteristics:
Good adhesion to the metal substrate
Excellent corrosion resistance
Good wear resistance
Good resistance to chemicals and cleaning agents
Smooth, uniform coating surface
Stable color and gloss
Good electrostatic sprayability
Stable curing performance
Good batch-to-batch consistency
Additionally, based on the customer's existing spraying equipment, we provided recommendations for spraying and curing processes—covering pretreatment, electrostatic spraying parameters, film thickness control, and curing temperatures and times—to help the customer further enhance coating stability during production.
For food-related applications, we also coordinated with the customer to confirm material requirements and compliance documentation based on their specific products and usage conditions, thereby providing technical support for their product development and subsequent manufacturing.
IV. Cooperation Outcomes
Following sample testing, performance verification, and adjustments to the spraying process, the food-grade powder coating we supplied demonstrated stable performance on the customer's actual products. The coating exhibits excellent adhesion, surface finish, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance, meeting the customer's requirements for surface protection and aesthetic quality on metal components used in food-related equipment.
After multiple rounds of sample testing and technical consultations, the customer finalized the product and spraying process, subsequently adopting our powder coating for the mass production of the relevant products.
Through this collaboration, we not only met the customer's needs for powder coating on food-related equipment but also helped improve coating quality stability through formulation optimization and process support. The partnership evolved from initial sample testing into a stable, long-term relationship.
This project involving food-grade powder coating for a US customer also demonstrates our comprehensive capabilities in powder coatings for food-related applications, customized formulation development, spraying process support, and international customer service.
